We are seeking a skilled and motivated GIS & Monitoring Officer to support the spatial planning, monitoring, and verification needs of our Spekboom reforestation projects. This role is integral to ensuring data-driven decision-making, accurate reporting, and operational efficiency in the restoration process.
The ideal candidate will have hands-on experience with Esri tools, mobile data collection, and GNSS systems, along with a strong foundation in environmental GIS and spatial analysis. The position involves both office-based geospatial work and regular fieldwork, including the use of RTK GNSS for staking and verification.
Key Responsibilities
Create and maintain up-to-date geospatial datasets for reforestation activities, including plantable areas, exclusion zones, and planted compartments.
Conduct spatial analysis to support planning, environmental assessments, and reporting.
Support the design and maintenance of field data collection tools using platforms like ArcGIS Field Maps or Survey123.
Process, clean, and validate incoming field data, ensuring spatial and attribute accuracy.
Assist with the creation of annual planting plans, infrastructure maps, and monitoring plots.
Collaborate with the GIS team to ensure integration with the broader enterprise GIS platform.
Provide GIS support to field teams, including training and troubleshooting of GPS or mobile data collection applications.
Participate in site visits and field verifications as needed.
Conduct weekly field monitoring of planted areas and restoration progress.
Use an RTK GNSS system to stake out locations for restoration activities and collect high-accuracy verification data post-implementation.
Perform additional tasks as requested for the project.
Skills and Experience Required
Bachelor's degree in Geography, Environmental Science, GIS, Remote Sensing, or a related field.
Minimum 3 years of experience in a GIS or mapping role, preferably within an environmental, forestry, or restoration context.
Proficiency in Esri tools, including ArcGIS Pro, ArcGIS Online, ArcGIS Field Maps, and Survey123.
Strong understanding of geospatial data management, coordinate systems, spatial analysis, and map production.
Experience with high-accuracy GNSS systems, particularly RTK GNSS, for field staking and data verification.
Field experience conducting spatial monitoring, environmental surveys, or restoration assessments.
Ability to process and validate field-collected data, ensuring both spatial accuracy and attribute completeness.
Experience creating planting plans, infrastructure layouts, and monitoring plots using GIS data.
Familiarity with mobile data collection workflows, including GPS troubleshooting and field app configuration.
Strong communication and interpersonal skills to support and train field teams.
Ability to work in remote or rugged environments, including participation in regular site visits and fieldwork.
Detail-oriented with strong organizational and analytical skills to support decision-making and reporting.
Must have a valid driving license.
Excellent written and spoken English.
