Gis Consultant ? Innovative Nature Finance

Job Description

As part of its strategy to diversify conservation funding and secure sustainable sources of funding for its operations, African Parks is implementing nature finance initiatives across its portfolio, including carbon credits projects, nature units and nature bonds. With several projects gaining momentum, there is a need to upscale internal GIS expertise to support the development of these initiatives.
The GIS consultant will perform geospatial analyses, develop and automate geospatial workflows and produce visual map outputs for the Innovative Nature Finance team to support the implementation and monitoring of outcomes-based spatial units and carbon-related activities. The consultant will also work closely with the geospatial unit with potential opportunities to get involved in strategic research work, database and data management and training of colleagues.
The support we're seeking will be provided by an independent contractor and is not intended to be construed as services from a professional services firm.
Scope of work:

  • Conduct remote sensing analysis to quantify habitat intactness through mapping of anthropogenic disturbances.
  • Develop and automate geospatial workflows to support the development of habitat intactness mapping.
  • Develop spatial models and maps for carbon stock estimation and sequestration potential in line with Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation REDD+) and Afforestation, Reforestation, and Revegetation (ARR) methodologies.
  • Work closely with park teams to collect and manage geospatial datasets related to land cover, biodiversity, carbon stocks, and disturbance events.
  • Ensure data integrity and compliance with relevant standards (such as natural capital accounting standards).
  • Produce maps (dynamic, web-based and static) and graphics for internal use and external audiences.
  • Support the geospatial unit with spatial data, database and user management.
  • Training colleagues on the use of relevant spatial tools and workflows.
  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in geography, GIS, remote sensing, data science, geoinformatics or a related field;
  • Minimum of 5 years relevant experience;
  • Solid working understanding of geospatial data types and analysis;
  • Proficient and experienced in at least one of the following: ArcGIS Pro, QGIS, R, PostGIS or Google Earth Engine.
  • Remote sensing interpretation to create insight from satellite images;
  • Cartography skills to produce professional, aesthetic, and accurate maps;
  • The ability to work independently but also collaboratively; and
  • An excellent eye for detail.
Beneficial skills:
  • Proficiency in Python scripting/coding; and
  • Speak French and/or Portuguese and have a willingness to travel to remote places.
