Job Description

We are seeking a reliable and detail-focused Food Safety Assistant to support our Food Safety Team Leader within an egg production pack station environment. This role is operationally focused and requires a candidate with practical, on-the-floor food safety experience, ensuring that hygiene, quality, and food safety standards are consistently applied in a high-care food handling facility.

This position is suited to a junior food safety professional who is comfortable working in a production environment and who understands the discipline required to maintain compliance on a daily basis.

Key Responsibilities:



Support the implementation and day-to-day maintenance of the Food Safety Management System (FSMS) within the pack station Conduct routine hygiene, GMP, and food safety inspections in production areas Assist with internal audits, customer audits, and regulatory inspections Monitor critical control points (CCPs), prerequisite programmes (PRPs), and hygiene controls Verify records, complete checklists, and ensure accurate and timeous documentation Assist with staff hygiene and food safety training, including induction training Identify non-conformances on the production floor and assist with corrective and preventative actions Ensure compliance with relevant standards and procedures applicable to egg handling and packing Support investigations related to food safety incidents, deviations, or customer complaints

Minimum Requirements:



National Senior Certificate (Matric)

At least 1 year practical experience in a food production, pack station, or food handling environment

Working knowledge of HACCP, GMP, and hygiene controls in a production setting Exposure to food safety systems such as: SANS 10330 (HACCP) SANS 10049 (PRPs / GMPs) Ability to work with food safety records, checklists, and standard operating procedures

Preferred Experience:



Experience in an egg pack station, poultry, fresh produce, or similar food handling facility Prior involvement in audits (internal or external) Basic understanding of traceability, stock flow, and hygiene zoning Experience working in temperature-controlled or high-care areas

Key Competencies:



Strong attention to detail and ability to follow procedures precisely Good communication skills and confidence to engage with production staff Ability to work independently under guidance Willingness to spend time on the production floor as required

Work Environment:



Combination of production floor and administrative duties Requires adherence to strict hygiene, PPE, and food safety protocols
