Job Summary:



We are seeking a safety-focused and reliable

Flagman (Traffic Controller)

to join our railway construction and maintenance team. As a Flagman, you will ensure the safety of railway workers and the public by directing vehicular and pedestrian traffic around railway work zones, coordinating with train operations, and maintaining strict safety protocols. This role requires working in dynamic outdoor environments, excellent communication skills, and a commitment to railway safety standards.

Key Responsibilities:



Direct vehicular and pedestrian traffic safely around railway construction or maintenance zones using hand signals, flags, and stop/go signs. Coordinate with train dispatchers and railway supervisors to manage train movements and ensure safe passage through work zones. Set up, monitor, and remove traffic control devices, such as signs, cones, barricades, and warning lights, in compliance with railway safety regulations. Communicate effectively with railway crew members and other flaggers using handheld radios to ensure seamless operations. Monitor work zones for hazards, such as track obstructions or unsafe conditions, and report issues to supervisors immediately. Record and report any incidents or non-compliant behavior (e.g., vehicles or pedestrians ignoring signals) to railway authorities or law enforcement. Assist with minor railway maintenance tasks, such as clearing debris from tracks, when directed. Ensure emergency vehicles and personnel can access railway zones safely and efficiently. Adhere to all railway safety regulations, including Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) guidelines and company policies.

Required Qualifications:



Certification in railway safety or flagging. Minimum 1 year of experience as a flagman or in a similar role (traffic control or railway operations preferred). Must submit a

current CV

Required Skills:

Railway Safety Knowledge

: Familiarity with railway-specific safety protocols and FRA regulations.

Strong Communication

: Ability to convey clear instructions to drivers, pedestrians, and railway workers via hand signals, flags, or radios.

Physical Endurance

: Capable of standing for long periods (8-12 hours) in varied weather conditions (heat, cold, rain, etc.) and navigating uneven terrain near tracks.

Situational Awareness

: Keen attention to detail to monitor train movements, traffic, and potential hazards in work zones.

Team Collaboration

: Ability to work closely with railway crews, supervisors, and other flaggers to ensure coordinated operations.

Quick Decision-Making

: Ability to respond promptly to unexpected situations, such as train schedule changes or emergencies.

Safety Commitment

: Strict adherence to safety protocols to protect workers, the public, and yourself.

Reliability

: Punctual, dependable, and able to work flexible shifts, including nights and weekends.

Basic Literacy

: Ability to read and interpret railway work zone plans and safety documentation.

Preferred Skills:



Experience working in railway construction or maintenance environments. Knowledge of train signaling systems or railway operations. Bilingual communication skills (e.g., Spanish) for diverse work environments. First aid or CPR certification. Familiarity with basic railway tools or equipment (e.g., for clearing debris or assisting with minor track maintenance).

Work Environment:



Work is performed outdoors near active railway lines, in all weather conditions (extreme heat, cold, rain, or snow). Flaggers may work day, night, or weekend shifts, depending on train schedules and project demands. The role involves prolonged standing, walking on uneven surfaces, and exposure to train noise and vibrations. High-risk environment due to proximity to moving trains and vehicles; strict adherence to safety protocols is mandatory.
