RESPONSIBILITIES:
The incumbent will be responsible for:
Post level 10:
Co-ordinating diagnostic laboratory services for haematology, biochemistry, haemostasis, cytology and endocrinology and assure quality;
Conducting tests and inspections of products, services and processes to evaluate quality and performance of the laboratory;
Performing complex laboratory examinations and tests in haematology, biochemistry, endocrinology, haemostasis and cytology;
Performing laboratory administration;
Providing technical support to clinical staff and researchers;
Providing practical laboratory training to veterinary and veterinary nursing students;
Participating in a 24-hour service to the Onderstepoort Veterinary Academic Hospital.
Post level 9:
In addition to the abovementioned:Assisting with the laboratory quality control management;
Manage junior laboratory staff.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
Post level 10:
National Diploma/BTech/BHS in Veterinary Technology;
Registration with the SAVC as a veterinary technologist;
Two years' experience in laboratory technology, specifically biochemistry and haematology, including administration.
Post level 9:
BTech/BHS in Veterinary Technology;
Registration with the SAVC as a veterinary technologist;
Three years' experience in laboratory technology, specifically biochemistry and haematology, including administration.
REQUIRED COMPETENCIES (SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE AND BEHAVIOURAL ATTRIBUTES):
Computer literacy (basic MS Word and Excel, and database and laboratory information management system (LIMS) software);
Report writing skills;
Knowledge of ISO standards and laboratory quality assurance;
Knowledge of blood cells and cell abnormalities in domestic animals (including exotic animals);
Knowledge of laboratory equipment e.g. centrifuges, microscopes, spectrophotometers, automated haematology analysers, chemiluminescence analysers, coagulometers and their maintenance;
Near vision and reasoning abilities;
Attention to detail;
Physical mobility and arm-hand steadiness;
Post level 9: In addition to the above mentioned: Advance knowledge of laboratory quality control.
ADDED ADVANTAGES AND PREFERENCES:
M Tech in Veterinary Technology or an MSc in an appropriate field;
Two years' experience in veterinary laboratory technology and administration in a research and/or academic environment;
Post level 9: In addition to the above mentioned
+ Experience with laboratory quality assurance programmes;
+ Formal training in Laboratory Quality Assurance.

The annual remuneration package will be commensurate with the incumbent's level of appointment, as determined by UP policy guidelines. UP subscribes to the BESTMED and UMVUZO medical aid schemes and contributes 50% of the applicable monthly premium.
