VETERINARY TECHNOLOGIST (HISTOTECHNOLOGIST)


PEROMNES POST LEVEL 9/10/11 (ONE POST)

The Pathology Laboratory within the Department of Paraclinical Science is seeking the services of a Histotechnologist who is registered with the SAVC as a Veterinary Technologist. The level of appointment will depend on the candidate's knowledge and experience.



RESPONSIBILITIES:


These duties and functions include, but not limited to:

Responsible for the daily routine work in the Histopathology Laboratory in order to achieve efficient and cost-effective service; Maintenance of all equipment; Ensure processing, embedding and cutting of samples received from various laboratories; Reagent preparation and staining for both the Histopathology and the Immunohistochemistry laboratories; Ensure that all laboratory system protocols, e.g., safety and quality details are adhered to; Trouble shooting and reporting all malfunctions, non-conformances and incidents; Maintain and manage quality assurance; and Administrative duties linked to the post.


MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

Post level 9: First Veterinary technologist



National Diploma in Veterinary Technology; Three years' experience performing Histotechniques (Microtomy, tissue processing and HistoStains); Registration with South African Veterinary Council; Advanced knowledge of Histotechniques; Competent in techniques practiced in a histopathology laboratory; and Advanced knowledge of ISO17025.

Post level 10: Senior Veterinary Technologist



National Diploma in Veterinary Technology; Two years' experience performing Histotechniques (Microtomy, tissue processing and HistoStains); Registration with South African Veterinary Council; Proficient knowledge of Histotechniques; Competent in techniques practiced in a histopathology laboratory; and Basic knowledge of ISO17025.

Post level 11: Veterinary Technologist



National Diploma in Veterinary Technology; One year experience performing Histotechniques (Microtomy, tissue processing and HistoStains); Registration with South African Veterinary Council; Basic knowledge of Histotechniques; Competent in techniques practised in a histopathology laboratory; and Knowledge of ISO17025 will be an added advantage.


REQUIRED COMPETENCIES (SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE AND BEHAVIOURAL ATTRIBUTES):

Proficient computer skills; Applicable professional communication and language skills, both written and verbal; Ability to work under pressure without compromising detail and accuracy; Ability to actively participate as a member of a team to move toward the completion of goals; Ability to accomplishes tasks and processes accurately and completely; and Experience in Quality Control Programme.


ADDED ADVANTAGES AND PREFERENCES:

Immunohistochemistry techniques experience.

PLEASE NOTE: The successful candidate will be required to undergo a basic health screening on appointment and thereafter an annual health screening.


The annual remuneration package will be commensurate with the incumbent's level of appointment, as determined by UP policy guidelines. UP subscribes to the BESTMED and UMVUZO medical aid schemes and contributes 50% of the applicable monthly premium.
