Job description
The Financial Accountant is responsible for the accuracy, integrity, and timeliness of financial records, ensuring all transactions are recorded up to Trial Balance level. The role oversees bookkeeping and manages compliance with statutory requirements, prepares management accounts, and provides financial insights to support decision-making. This position also supervises finance staff, implements internal controls, and drives process improvements.
Key Responsibilities
Financial Reporting & Control
Ensure the accurate recording, classification, and reconciliation of all financial transactions through to Trial Balance level for multiple entities.
Review bookkeeping, journals, reconciliations, and sub-ledger to General Ledger balances
Prepare and review monthly management accounts, including detailed variance analysis, accruals, provisions, and supporting schedules.
Compile and maintain comprehensive year-end audit files, ensuring audit readiness and timely resolution of audit queries.
Maintain, review, and reconcile the Fixed Asset Register, including depreciation calculations, disposals, and impairment assessments in accordance with IFRS
Compliance & Statutory Submissions
Oversee and review the preparation, calculation, and submission of VAT201, EMP201, EMP501, and Income Tax Returns (ITR14) for multiple legal entities in compliance with SARS requirements and statutory deadlines.
Ensure full compliance with South African tax legislation, Companies Act, IFRS, and relevant regulatory frameworks.
Liaise with SARS, auditors, and other regulatory bodies to resolve queries and ensure compliance.
Cashflow Planning & Financial Controls
Review and approve creditor reconciliations, payment batches, and electronic funds transfer (EFT) runs in line with cashflow forecasts.
Monitor and manage debtors and creditors Teams, and collections, ensuring optimal working capital management and adherence to credit policies.
Prepare and review cashflow forecasts, identifying risks and recommending mitigation strategies to management.
Staff Supervision & Leadership
Lead, mentor, and develop the finance team, ensuring high performance, technical competence, and adherence to deadlines.
Oversee payroll processes, including review of timesheets, salary calculations, statutory deductions, and payroll reconciliations.
Ensure effective communication and collaboration with branches and cross-functional departments.
Strategic & Operational Support
Design, implement, and continuously improve financial policies, procedures, and internal control frameworks.
Provide financial analysis, insights, and reporting to support operational decision-making and strategic initiatives.
Assist management with budgeting, forecasting, and cost control initiatives.
Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field (essential).
Professional qualification or progress toward one, such as CA(SA), SAIPA, CIMA, or ACCA (advantageous).
Completed articles / learnership (SAICA or SAIPA) will be highly advantageous.
Experience
Minimum of 5-8 years' relevant financial accounting experience, with at least 2-3 years in a senior or supervisory role.
Proven experience in financial reporting, monthly management accounts, trial balance to financial statements, and year-end audits.
Strong hands-on experience with South African tax compliance, including VAT201, PAYE, UIF, SDL, and Income Tax (ITR14).
Experience managing multi-entity or group structures.
Demonstrated experience in staff supervision, performance management, and mentoring of finance teams.
Technical & Systems Skills
Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel (pivot tables, lookups, formulas).
Experience working with ERP / accounting systems (e.g. Sage, Pastel, Xero, SAP, or similar).
