Purpose of the Role
The Finance Officer (Compliance) is responsible for ensuring that the organisation adheres to all statutory and regulatory financial obligations, while also supporting the accuracy and integrity of the financial records. This includes managing compliance with SARS, assisting with audits, and processing daily accounting transactions in line with best practices and company policy.
Key Responsibilities
o Ensure compliance with SARS regulations including PAYE, VAT, Income Tax, and other statutory returns.
o Prepare and submit all SARS tax filings and returns on time (eFiling, VAT201, EMP201).
o Maintain accurate and up-to-date compliance records and schedules.
o Support the management of payment arrangements with SARS (e.g. DOPs) and ensure ongoing compliance.
o Prepare compliance reports, tax reconciliations, and respond to SARS queries or audits.
o Monitor legislative changes and advise the finance team on implications.
o Process day-to-day accounting transactions, including supplier invoices, journals, payments, and bank reconciliations.
o Ensure that all transactions are properly recorded, classified, and supported by relevant documentation.
o Reconcile tax and general ledger accounts regularly and resolve discrepancies.
o Assist with external audits by preparing schedules, supporting documents, and responding to queries.
o Support the preparation of monthly management accounts and internal reports.
o Assist with internal controls and compliance risk mitigation.
Minimum Requirements
o National Diploma or Degree in Finance, Accounting, or a related field.
o Minimum of 2-3 years experience in a finance, accounting, or compliance-related role.
o Solid understanding of SARS compliance, tax legislation, and statutory reporting.
o Proficiency in using SARS eFiling, Microsoft Excel, and accounting systems (e.g. Sage/Pastel & Quickbooks).
o Experience in processing accounting transactions and managing reconciliations.
o Strong attention to detail and good record-keeping skills.
