Job Description

As a result of the recently procured Rhino Project with its goals to rewild an estimated 2000 rhino, African Parks is looking for a Field Operations Manager that will be responsible for the day-to-day running of the operation.

Role and Responsibilities:

The Field Operations Manager (FOM) will be a member of the Rhino Rewilding Project PMU, and will be responsible for:

Technical:

• Design, budget and execute activities, in line with the approved budget and to the correct standard alongside the Project Manager
• Actively manage all contractors on site;
• Ensure a proper functioning radio communications and Earth Ranger system.
• Logistics management, workshop management, construction, maintenance & repair of project equipment and infrastructure (buildings and fence), airstrips and mechanical assets;
• Work closely with the Law Enforcement, Operations Department, Sustainable Projects Department and ensure their equipment needs are met so that their operations run smoothly;
• Ensure effective stock control and storage management systems are in place, working with Section Managers;
• Participate in infrastructure and fleet procurement;
• Oversee transport and/or storage of deliveries to the project;
• Ensure all relevant licenses / permits for all vehicles are in place;
• Ensure fleet serviced and maintained according to a preventative maintenance schedule and operated to reduce cost and risk;
• Ensure fleet replacement as per the replacement schedule;
• Promote a culture of safety amongst staff operating vehicles and machinery.

Law enforcement, Conservation and Other Field Operations:

• In conjunction with the Head of Law Enforcement and Rangers coordinate the law enforcement and intelligence activities in and around the Project;
• Provide leadership through participation to ensure a well-motivated and effective LE team that can ensure area integrity;
• Ensure necessary logistical support is in place to enable LE function;
• Ensure LE team adequately equipped and all materials are regularly upgraded according to AP SOPxe2x80x99s;
• Ensure LE team adequately trained and equipped as required;

General:

• The FOM will report to the Project Manager;
• The FOM will liaise with the Project Manager to ensure that the goals of the Law Enforcement Division are not inconsistent with Project rewilding goals;
• The FOM will liaise with the Project Manager to ensure that goals of the operations are not inconsistent with Project Rewilding goals;
• The FOM will stand for the Project Manager when he/she is on leave or away from the Park;
• The FOM will participate in the Duty Manager weekend roster, in conjunction with the respective Section Managers, Head of Law Enforcement and Risk Technicians;
• The FOM will ensure the adherence to the African Parks Standard Operating Procedures in all activities under his control;
• The FOF will perform other administrative, technical and general tasks as an when required by the Project Manager and/or African Parks.

Required qualifications, competencies and experience:

• Relevant tertiary qualification, e.g. park operations / conservation / wildlife management
• Helicopter Pilotxe2x80x99s licence an advantage
• 3-5 yearsxe2x80x99 experience working in similar environments and roles
• Experience in non-profit organisations
