Job Description


Purpose of Position

The Environmental & Sustainability Specialist role will be responsible for:

Development and maintenance of a Safety & Security, Health, Environment & Sustainability and Quality Program and Culture, focusing on Environment and Sustainability, developing related targets and maintaining a positive environment and sustainability performance in line with legal and Vopak standards.

Coordinate, drive and monitor compliance with policies and procedures to ensure compliance with these standards and continuous improvements. Interact with and report on Safety & Security, Health, Environment & Sustainability and Quality to the relevant authorities, Vopak Management and Corporate representatives. Support in creating and maintaining knowledgeable staff in environment and sustainability and positive safety culture within the organization.

Develop means of safely controlling of projects, operating tasks, maintenance, demolition, remediation, construction, and similar work activities that may pose a risk to people, environment, assets and business reputation through effective leadership, governance, verification, facilitating and engaging approach to drive and develop a culture of ownership for environment and sustainability.

Tasks & Responsibilities

  • Lead in the identification and development of Environmental and Sustainability management programs and improvements based on the strategic objectives of the organization, changes in legislation, trending of SHE performance, industry best practices, customer requirements and general improvements.
  • Developing, reviewing and implementation of Environmental and Sustainability management plans, policies and procedures including waste management plan. Take a lead role in ensuring VIMS alignment to the ISO/Vopak Standards together with the Quality officer.
  • Provide leadership and technical support to business as a custodian in all environmental compliance and sustainability matters including adherence to license, permit requirements and all statutory submissions including air, biodiversity, soil and groundwater, SDS requirements.
  • Development and management of Environmental and Sustainability portfolio including legal register, effluent discharge permit requirements, air emission for VOPAK South Africa.
  • Facilitating and driving sustainability agenda for VOPAK South Africa by developing sustainability roadmap, driving sustainability projects and trainings to the business.
  • Accounting officer for systems such as SAAELIP, NAEIS, LDAR, air quality, waste management, internal and external complaints, legal matters, and others.
  • Provide support with plant related initiatives that require environmental support including applications for EIAs, review of EIA conditions, and other legal requirements, support to business in meeting those conditions where environmental expertise is required
  • Being the recognized Subject Matter Expert (SME) and Authorizer (together with other authorities) of Environmental and Sustainability Critical and/or High risk tasks, ensuring they take place safely through approved procedures/processes and compliance activities e.g. Trust and Verify, Field Audits, Legal Audits, Customer Audits, etc. and/or other similar processes.
  • Identification, development, facilitation and implementation of SHE related training within the organization as required, focusing on Environmental and Sustainability.
  • Provide input into the annual SHEQ action plan, Safety Improvement Plan, budget and development of KPIs, and other tools to drive & monitor progress. Report monthly and quarterly as required.
  • Provide leadership, support and specialist Environmental and Sustainability input in meetings/ projects such as Safety Committee, Department interface, Contractor/Customer meetings, SAPIA and with relevant authorities. This role is expected to take the lead in driving proper & effective functioning of Environmental and Sustainability and to represent VOPAK on Regulator SHE forums.
  • Perform incident investigations, monitor the close out of corrective actions, alerts, lessons learnt and provide trends to support continuous improvement. This role is expected to take the lead in driving closeout of Environmental and Sustainability investigations.
  • Support the organization on the development of a positive SHEQ culture amongst staff and contractors by raising Environmental and Sustainability awareness, empowering and coaching staff in Environmental and Sustainability matters within their job functions.
  • Perform Regular Site Observations & Audits to influence and ensure behavior based SHEQ.
  • Contractor/Supplier Management xe2x80x93 provide Environmental and Sustainability input into Contractor requirements for activities/projects on site (baseline SHE requirements into Contracts), inspect Contractor files, audit of facilities / activities on a regular basis.
  • Facilitating and conducting audits to verify Environmental and Sustainability compliance level of Vopak and contractors (Acts, codes, VSA standards etc.)
  • Facilitate the implementation of ISO14001 and integrated SHEQ Management system
  • Developing trends of leading and lagging indicators, ensure good Environmental performance, Systems Continual Improvement and Internal and External professional reporting.
Qualifications & Experience Required

Tertiary Qualification
  • NQF 7 Degree in Environmental Management, Engineering or equivalent and studying further in the SHEQ environment
  • Proof of Facilitation Training (certificate or other) and experience
  • Registration with a professional association (SACNASP, NACA or equivalent)
  • Knowledge of legal systems such as SAAELIP, NAIES, LDAR, Hazmat and Pollution response and others
Experience
  • Must be a seasoned Environmental Practitioner/Professional with well-grounded industry experience with 5 xe2x80x93 7 years proven specialized experience in a senior role
  • Recognized Environmental and Sustainability training & experience
  • Strong exposures and experience in Emergency response /Mechanical /Engineering/ Operations would be advantageous
  • Active exposure to emergency response e.g. Fire and Rescue, First Aid/BAA/BLS response, High Angle Rope Access Rescuer, would be advantageous
Skills / Attributes/Knowledge Required

Skills/Attributes Required:
  • Demonstrable knowledge of Industrial/Petrochemical Environmental and Sustainability Management Processes through industry experience
  • Sound knowledge and understanding of all Environmental legislations, Cutler requirements and other relevant legislations including the Occupational Health and Safety Act 85 of 1993 and relevant regulations.
  • Sound knowledge of developing scope of works, EMPxe2x80x99s, Waste plans, Effluent management, Legal register, project management and working with different teams.
  • Understanding of site operations e.g. Mechanical/Maintenance processes, Operational Activities, SHEQ roles and practices.
  • Understanding properties of chemicals and S.D.S
  • Understanding of Petrochemical Tank Storage, and loading/unloading processes/activities as it pertains to the SHEQ environment
  • Training, facilitation and presentation skills
  • Mentorship skills to graduates, subordinates and other members of the team.
