Job Description


Main purpose of the job:

  • To conduct day-to-day study-related activities including collection of blood, HIV counseling and testing, participant recruitment, data collection, capturing, and quality assurance
  • To adhere to the protocol guidelines and provide ethical study procedures amongst transgender individuals
Location:
  • Port Elizabeth (Gqeberha) - Nelson Mandela Bay
Key performance areas:
  • Provide HIV testing and counseling services in line with Department of Health guidelines
  • Participate in demand-creation activities by educating and recruiting potential transgender individuals for the study
  • Screen participants for study eligibility
  • Collect blood samples from study participants according to standard phlebotomy practices
  • Conduct an informed consent process with participants
  • Collect data from participants through structured interviews
  • Abstract data from participant medical records
  • Adhere to study protocols, GCP, and local requirements for the ethical conduct of research in human participants
  • Ensures that bio-hazardous waste is disposed of in the correct manner to comply with relevant safety protocols and standard operating procedures
  • Keeps record of specimens collected and ensures that all patient details and clinical information are accurately recorded
  • Support the team with any other research-related activities
  • Refer participants for further services such as sexual and reproductive health and primary health care where necessary
  • Maintain all participant files and filing systems
  • Complete all relevant project administration as and when required (e.g. participant reimbursements)
  • Compile daily and weekly participant reports
  • Store and archive data according to SOPs (electronic and hard copy data)
  • Manage project inventory and stock
  • Take ownership and accountability for tasks and demonstrate effective self-management
  • Follow through to ensure that quality and productivity standards of own work are consistently and accurately
  • Maintain a positive attitude and respond openly to feedback.
  • Take ownership of driving your own career development by attending training and development sessions and relevant meetings.
  • Attend training and development sessions such as gender-affirming workshops and other related seminars.
Required minimum education and training:
  • Certificate in Enrolled Nursing
  • Training HIV testing and counseling
  • Training in phlebotomy
  • Able to communicate and work with transgender people in community settings
Required minimum work experience:
  • At least 1-year relevant experience in the health field, or related position in research studies
Desirable additional education, work experience, and personal abilities:
  • Able to communicate in a professional and positive manner with stakeholders and colleagues
  • Motivated, passionate, people-oriented, and proactive communicator
  • Working overtime or over weekends may be required from time to time
  • May be required to work at sites that are under strict confidentiality
  • Excited to create meaningful contributions to public health policy
  • Ability to work under tight deadlines with minimum supervision
  • Organized, with a thorough and accurate approach to work and attention to detail
  • Spoken and written fluency in English and isiZulu or isiXhosa
  • Able to communicate and work with transgender people in community settings
