Engineering Planner Gearbox Manufacturing

Johannesburg, GP, ZA, South Africa

Job Description

The Engineering Planner is responsible for bridging the gap between engineering design and full-scale gearbox manufacturing, ensuring all projects are scheduled, resourced, and executed effectively. This role requires both technical and organizational expertise to translate bills of Materials (BOMs) into structured production plans. By coordinating across engineering, procurement, production, and quality, the Engineering Planner ensures gearbox components and assemblies are delivered on time, to specification, and within cost targets.

Key Responsibilities

Develop and maintain detailed schedules for gearbox manufacturing projects, including machining, sub-assembly, final assembly, quality control and coating phases. Convert engineering BOMs and CAD data into routings, work orders, and accurate capacity plans. Monitor shop floor load and align priorities with resource availability to meet delivery commitments. Update and reforecast schedules to respond to changes in design release, material availability, or customer requirements. Participate in design reviews, ensuring alignment of engineering outputs with production requirements. Support resolution of technical planning challenges by analysing root causes and proposing corrective actions. Serve as the link between engineering, manufacturing, procurement, and quality assurance teams. Coordinate procurement activities, identifying long-lead gearbox components (e.g., gears, shafts, bearings, housings) and ensuring timely sourcing. Provide accurate project status reports, highlighting potential delays, capacity constraints, and risks. Foster collaboration across departments to drive accountability and keep projects on track. Review planning performance and production data to identify bottlenecks and inefficiencies. Implement initiatives to optimize machining centre utilization, reduce rework, and improve workflow. Contribute to Lean, Kaizen, and other improvement programs within the plant. Recommend updates to planning tools, templates, and methods for greater efficiency and accuracy.

Minimum Requirements

Bachelor's degree or diploma in Mechanical, Manufacturing, or Industrial Engineering (or related discipline). 3-5 years of experience in engineering or production planning within a heavy engineering or precision machining environment. Product knowledge of gearboxes and drivetrain systems (components, functionality, and applications). Strong understanding of gearbox-related processes: gear cutting, precision machining, heat treatment, balancing, assembly, and testing. Experience working in gearbox manufacturing or rotating equipment industries. Familiarity with Lean Manufacturing, Six Sigma, or other structured improvement tools. Proficiency in ERP/MRP systems for production planning and scheduling. Competency with CAD systems (AutoCAD, SolidWorks, Inventor) for interpreting design intent. Ability to interpret engineering drawings, CAD models, and technical specifications. Excellent analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills. Strong communication and interpersonal abilities for cross-functional collaboration. High attention to detail with the capacity to manage multiple priorities under pressure.
