As an EH&S Specialist, you will play a key role in ensuring compliance with local legislation and global standards while fostering a strong safety culture across the site. You will lead initiatives that protect people, processes, and the environment by developing and implementing strategies that strengthen existing EHS programs. This position combines operational safety leadership with responsibilities for ISO 14001 Environmental Management and Process Safety Management (PSM). In addition, you will maintain and promote EHS awareness among employees, contractors, and visitors to create a safe and sustainable workplace.
The role is based in Cape Town, South Africa in an onsite capacity.
Where you will make a differenceLead EH&S Programs: Implement and maintain site EHS systems aligned with ISO 14001 and ISO 45001, ensuring compliance with South African OHSA and environmental regulations. Process Safety Management: Drive PSM implementation, including Process Hazard Analysis (PHA), Management of Change (MOC), Permit to Work, and Mechanical Integrity programs. Risk Management: Conduct risk assessments (HIRA, PHA), audits, and inspections; ensure corrective actions are completed. Gemba Walks & Engagement: Actively participate in Gemba walks and other shop-floor engagement activities to identify hazards and reinforce safety culture. Policies & Procedures: Contribute to the creation, review, and updating of safety policies and procedures, and ensure effective implementation across the site. Training & Culture: Coordinate EHS training, toolbox talks, and awareness campaigns to strengthen safety culture across all levels. Incident Management: Lead investigations for incidents and near misses, report findings, and implement preventive measures. Compliance & Reporting: Maintain legal registers, manage environmental reporting, and support internal/external audits. Procurement: Manage ordering of safety-related items (PPE, signage), coordinate on-site OH&S service providers, and arrange annual medicals and health programs. EHS Administration: Oversee EHS schedules, including Health & Safety Representative and Committee meetings; maintain minutes; run monthly EHS topics and engagement programs. Emergency Planning & Response: Prepare for and manage emergencies effectively, including drills and coordination with relevant stakeholders. Waste & Pest Control: Ensure proper waste segregation, disposal, and compliance with environmental standards; oversee pest control programs to maintain site hygiene and food safety; liaise with suppliers and contractors regarding OH&S requirements. Contractor Safety Management: Ensure all contractors submit up-to-date safety files, evaluate the content for compliance, and oversee the process to maintain contractor safety standards. Security Oversight: Oversee the performance and compliance of the on-site security service provider to ensure alignment with company safety and security standards. Continuous Improvement: Participate in global EHS initiatives, support 5S/6S studies, and drive local improvement projects for sustainability and safety performance.

What makes you the right fitDegree/Diploma in Environmental Science, Safety Management, or Chemical/Process Engineering. Minimum 5 years EHS experience in a food manufacturing environment. Strong communication, organizational, and leadership skills. Computer literacy (MS Office); auditing experience advantageous. Ability to work independently and conscientiously. Proficiency in data management and analytics. Knowledge of Process Safety. Knowledge of Fire and Electrical Safety.

How would you stand out?Experience with ISO 14001, ISO 45001, and PSM elements (PHA, LOPA, MOC etc.). Knowledge of South African OHSA. Understanding of FSSC 22000 and GMP requirements. Good understanding of Enzyme Safe handling practices.
