Job Description


The Senior Writer's role is to bring our clients' stories and opinions to life through creative use of the written word, leading assignments such as Thought Leadership, Video Scripting, Speech Writing, Digital Writing, and the occasional Strategic Narrative. Long form and short-form writing will be a daily requirement.

Responsibilities and Expectations:

  • SKILLS (Client & Stakeholder Engagement, Business & Project Management, Business Development and Talent Development/Leadership)
  • Produce written materials in a variety of formats, including print collateral (press materials, brochures), Web, social and interactive content, speeches and other thought leadership pieces.
  • An understanding that our writing must promote African development while also being able to write for international entities - usually with a developing world focus.
  • Maintaining a consistent voice and vision for each of our clients, occasionally taking on a brand custodian role.
  • Utilise data from client reports to craft smart, engaging content and content calendars.
  • Edit posts/content created by guest bloggers, freelancers, and teammates.
  • Juggle multiple assignments and work in a high-pressure environment.
  • Manage time and establish priorities while maintaining flexibility to respond to changing demands.
  • Successfully communicate creative/analytical content ideas and the rationale behind them to clients
  • Collaborate with agency team members from creative, account, production, PR, strategy, planning and analytics to produce smart, powerful work
  • Understand the concept behind creative work and how it achieves client and business goals
  • Stay on top of trends through business/industry monitoring and outside resources (e.g., research bodies, academics, industry gurus)
Qualifications:
  • Basic Qualifications:
  • At least eight years of relevant experience, ideally with some agency experience.
  • Preferred Qualifications:
  • A bachelor's degree, preferably in English or related major
  • A background in financial and/or digitally focused editorial writing. Both would be ideal.
  • Excellent writing and editing skills with demonstrated experience in analytical and/or conceptual writing.
  • Ability to think strategically and conceptualise creatively.
  • Strong presentation and verbal communication skills, as this is occasionally a client-facing role.
  • Ability to work cross-functionally and with a fast-paced team.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines.
  • Ability to own projects, demonstrate good judgment when working with team members and client contacts, and take initiative.
  • Experience managing day-to-day changes at every level of detail.
  • (DIGITAL specific) Social fluency and a solid understanding of how to drive conversation and engagement across social channel.
