We have an exciting position for a Diesel Mechanic to Maintain the reliable and safe operation of diesel-powered vehicles and equipment through routine maintenance, diagnosis, and effective repairs.

Kumba Iron Ore
We produce high-grade iron ore, the key component in steel widely used in construction and manufacturing across the world. Our activities include all aspects - exploration; mining; processing and blending; shipping; marketing and selling. In South Africa, we have mining operations in the Northern Cape province, as well as a head office in Gauteng, and a port operation in Saldanha Bay, Western Cape.

To perform maintenance effectively to maximize the availability of equipment to sections at the lowest cost by:

  • Safety, Health, and Environment
  • Adhere to all health and safety practices and requirements.
  • Promote good housekeeping to ensure compliance and an environment where team members can deliver their outputs within a controlled risk environment.
  • "Exemplify" all relevant safety standards and procedures as a positive example for learners to follow and prioritise in their work practices.
  • Active participation in SLAMs, HPHs, relevant Risk Assessments and close-out of Safety Actions.
  • Performance and Delivery
  • Equipment and Machinery Maintenance:
  • Maintain and test all equipment/machinery to ensure functionality, safety, reliability, and availability to complete jobs within the specified timeframe and budgetary limits.
  • Conduct inspections to identify possible failures and repair or raise notifications for repairs.
  • Ensure that the work environment has the necessary spare parts and that defective components are identified to find and implement permanent solutions.
  • Execute work as per Operating Model standards and procedures.
  • Complete job cards thoroughly and return them on time.
  • Keep all toolboxes and tools clean and in a sound condition.
  • Oil Sampling:
  • Collect or supervise the collection of components oil when necessary and on the prescribed area for oil analyses to provide accurate data and prevent equipment breakdowns.

  • The Work: Key Outputs and Accountabilities
  • Identify and provide accurate and understandable information and continuous on-the-job training to assist learners/team members in acquiring the required competencies and addressing shortcomings.
  • Supervise work practices and skills of learners/team members to ensure performance on the required level and compliance with company policies and procedures.
  • Assistance and Practices:
  • Assist supervisor and co-workers when required within company policies, procedures and guidelines to enhance teamwork objectives.
  • Provide advice in all maintenance-related matters and tactics to concerned parties proactively aligned with best practices and within agreed-upon timeframes to avoid possible problems and uplift the competence base.
  • Handover: Ensure proper communication and handover of outstanding tasks between shifts and day-shift teams.
This role is in the Engineering & Maintenance (ENG) department at Band 9 (B3) level reporting to the Supervisor.
Qualifications
  • Grade 12/N3 Technical
  • Occupational Red Seal Certificate as a Diesel Mechanic
  • Valid SA Drivers Licence
Technical Knowledge
  • Knowledge gained from 2 years of operational experience as a Diesel Mechanic.
  • Understanding of essential skills and techniques commonly employed by artisans.
  • Awareness of safety standards and regulations relevant to the work.
  • Familiarity with the equipment used in the specific field of work.
  • Knowledge of various oil sampling methodologies and their practical applications.
