Job Description


The South African National Biodiversity Institute (SANBI) is seeking to appoint an organized, diligent and dedicated individual to provide strategic direction to ensure applicable measures to maintain responsible and accountable occupational health and safety management within SANBI at both the national and corporate levels and ensure that SANBI complies with the requirements of the Occupational Health and Safety Act no. 85 of 1993 and related regulations.

This position requires an advanced diploma or a degree in Occupational Health and Safety Management, Environmental Health or equivalent qualification at NQF 7. A post-graduate qualification in Occupational Health and Safety Management, Environmental Health at NQF 8 will be an added advantage. This position also requires a minimum of 8 years of work experience in the relevant field, 4 years of which should be in first line management position(s).

The following competencies are required for the candidate to be successful in this role: professional registration with South African Institute for Occupational Health and Safety (Saiosh); demonstrate excellent analytical and conceptual abilities; advanced organisational skills; the ability to maintain sound interpersonal relations; problem-solving ability and ability to communicate at all levels both verbally and in writing. The incumbent must have an excellent computer literacy as well as be in possession of a valid Code B (unendorsed) driver's license with one-year practical driving experience as well as be willing to travel.

Key Responsibilities will include:

  • Develop the safety, health and environmental strategy;
  • Develop and implement the Health and safety policy and standards;
  • Manage and implement health & safety systems, and manage contractors;
  • Manage risk and incident reporting;
  • Communicate and manage health and safety training and awareness campaigns; and
  • Facilitate Human Capital Development, And Change And Transformation.
