Overall Job Purpose:

  • The Dean: Research and Community Engagement is responsible for advancing a sustainable culture of academic research and socially responsive engagement across the institution. This includes leading strategic initiatives in institutional and applied research, managing community engagement programmes, coordinating external funding, overseeing research ethics compliance, and establishing scholarly publication practices such as journal development. The role ensures that all activities align with DHET requirements, institutional values, and the pursuit of research-informed teaching.
Research Strategy and Capacity Building
  • Build research capability among academic staff and monitor research outputs across campuses.
  • Develop and implement a five-year research development plan.
Community Engagement and Institutional Partnerships
  • Lead CE strategy aligned with institutional priorities.
  • Oversee campus CE initiatives and promote community-integrated teaching and research.
Research Ethics Oversight
  • Coordinate ethical clearance processes, liaise with the Ethics Committee, and maintain centralised ethics registers.
  • Ensure policy compliance and reviewer engagement.
Institutional Research and Data Analytics
  • Design and manage research projects that inform institutional decision-making.
  • Compile reports and disseminate findings to leadership and academic forums.
External Funding and Grants Management
  • Coordinate external grant acquisition, budget monitoring, and reporting in collaboration with Finance and Legal.
  • Support researchers in proposal development.
Scholarly Publications and Journal Development
  • Establish and manage accredited academic journals.
  • Oversee editorial processes, compliance with DHET policy, and open-access publishing standards.
Minimum Educational Requirement:
  • NQF Level 10 - Doctoral Degree with publication record
  • NQF Level 10 - PHD (Ideal)
Minimum Work Requirement:
  • Experience in higher education research management 5 Year(s)
  • Proven track record of accredited academic publications 5 Year(s)
  • Experience managing externally funded projects and grants 5 Year(s)
  • Experience in academic staff development and/or CE programme design 3 Year(s)
  • Experience in ethics clearance processes, DHET compliance, and publishing policies 5 Year(s)
