Role Clarification & Key Performance Areas

The University of the Western Cape has over the past few years steadily become one of the research-led teaching and learning universities in South Africa, with the capacity to produce and advance new knowledge in recognised research strength and the translation of this knowledge through innovation endeavours. In order to accelerate research, the University established the eResearch Unit in the office of the DVC (Research and Innovation) in 2019. This unit supports and promotes the use of advanced information technologies to enable better, faster and higher-impact research at UWC.

An exciting opportunity exists in the eResearch Unit for a suitably qualified candidate to the position of eResearch Data Analyst. The appointed person will be primarily responsible for using data and statistical tools to aid researchers with data collection, processing, analysis, interpretation, and visualization. The analyst will also work with other research units at UWC to ensure that all research data generated at the University is managed and curated to support the institution's aspirations of a research-intensive university. The analyst may also be required to assume other tasks related to the eResearch Office's mission.

The incumbent will be responsible for:

• Streamlining data collection methods to create automated and easy-to-use routines
• Designing and maintaining databases and data systems by addressing errors and monitoring performance
• Analysing and interpreting data using programming, statistical and artificial intelligence tools.
• Assist researchers with their data visualisation needs
• Work with other units at UWC to support researchers on Research Data Management (RDM) issues
• Organise basic data analysis short courses for UWC staff

Minimum Requirements

Minimum Requirements (Qualification and Experience)

• An Honours degree (NQF 8 level) in any of the following fields: mathematics, statistics, data science, or computer science.
• A minimum of 5 years recent experience in processing, optimization, and analysis of large data sets
• Experience with querying relational databases (SQL) and using R/Python to handle large data sets
• Experience with data visualization using Tableau, Quicksight, or similar tools
• Experience in using statistical software (e.g. SPSS or SAS, etc.)

Advantageous Requirements:

• A Masters degree (NQF 9 level) in statistics, mathematics, computer science or other quantitative fields.
• Possession of MongoDB, Cloudera Certified Associate (CCA) and/or Certified Analytics Professional (CAP) certifications

• Analytical and creative thinking
• A high level of integrity in handling sensitive information
• Ability to work independently as well as part of a team, use initiative, and be flexible.
• Knowledge of statistical modelling and ML techniques
• Ability and willingness to learn techniques in data analysis, web deployment, cloud services and HPC.
