The Position
Cost and Project Accountant
Ideal Candidate Profile
The ideal candidate is analytically minded, highly organised, and comfortable working across finance and project delivery teams. You have strong attention to detail, a pragmatic approach to problem-solving, and the ability to communicate financial information clearly to both technical and non-technical stakeholders. You are reliable, process-driven, and capable of managing competing priorities in a dynamic, project-focused environment.
Role Purpose
The Cost and Project Accountant will ensure accurate project costing, revenue recognition, and financial control for client engagements and internal initiatives. This role supports project managers and delivery leads by providing timely cost analysis, forecasting, and reporting to drive profitable project delivery and informed decision-making.
Responsibilities
Project Costing & Financial Control:
Record and maintain project costs, ensuring alignment with budgets and contracts
Reconcile project-related accounts, including work in progress (WIP), accrued costs, and deferred income
Support month-end close activities related to projects, including journal entries and balance sheet reconciliations
Ensure policies and controls are followed for expense allocation and capitalisation
Forecasting & Analysis:
Produce regular project forecasts and burn-rate analysis to highlight variances and trends
Collaborate with project managers to update estimates to complete and revenue forecasts
Analyse project profitability, margin movements, and drivers of cost overruns
Provide actionable recommendations to improve project financial performance
Revenue Recognition & Billing:
Apply revenue recognition policies to project contracts, ensuring compliance with accounting standards
Prepare and review project billing schedules and support invoice generation
Work with commercial and delivery teams to resolve billing queries and contract variations
Reporting & Stakeholder Communication:
Prepare month-end and ad-hoc project financial reports for finance leadership and project sponsors
Maintain and enhance project financial models, dashboards, and supporting documentation
Communicate financial results and key risks to project teams in a clear and constructive manner
Support audits and provide documentation to internal and external auditors as required
Process Improvement & Systems:
Identify opportunities to streamline project accounting processes and improve data accuracy
Support implementation and optimisation of ERP, PSA, and reporting tools
Document standard operating procedures and contribute to knowledge sharing across the finance team
Qualifications
A bachelor's degree or professional qualification in Accounting, Finance, or a related discipline (e.g., ACCA, CIMA, ACA) is preferred
Strong Excel skills and experience with financial systems (ERP/PSA/BI tools)
Solid understanding of accounting principles, revenue recognition, and project accounting
Experience preparing month-end close entries, reconciliations, and management reports
Preferred Experience
Project Accounting & Commercial Finance:
Experience working in a project-driven or professional services environment
Familiarity with WIP accounting, contract variations, and cost-to-complete methodologies
Background supporting commercial teams on contract interpretation and billing
Systems, Reporting & Analysis:
Hands-on experience with ERP systems (e.g., Sage, SAP, NetSuite) and project/PSA tools
Proficiency in creating reporting packages and dashboards using Power BI, Excel, or similar tools
Ability to write and maintain spreadsheet models and automate routine processes
Personal & Professional Skills:
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with an ability to influence stakeholders
Highly organised with strong time management and prioritisation capabilities
Comfortable working both independently and collaboratively across distributed teams
Curiosity and willingness to learn new systems, processes, and finance practices
