Job Description

The Construction Manager will be responsible for the on-site management, coordination, and successful delivery of utility-scale solar PV plant in the vicinity of De Aar. Ensuring construction activities are completed safely, on time, within budget, and to the required quality standards. Acts as the senior Sun Central representative on site, managing contractors, stakeholders and reporting to the Project Lead.

Principal responsibilities:

Oversee and manage all on-site construction activities, ensuring strict adherence to project plans, schedules, and HSE (Health, Safety & Environment) standards. Lead, motivate, and supervise on-site teams, including subcontractors and service providers. Serve as the primary on-site contact for Sun Central, ensuring effective communication between project stakeholders, contractors, consultants, etc.. Support Project Lead in the management of the project. Coordinate and manage daily, weekly, and monthly site meetings, reporting on progress, risks, and milestones. Coordinate with Compliance team members to support site activities. Ensure quality control of all construction activities, conducting inspections and overseeing testing/commissioning processes. Manage site logistics, resource allocation, and inventory of materials and equipment. Monitor project progress against the program, identifying and resolving issues to mitigate delays or budget overruns. Ensure compliance with local regulations, environmental permits, and company standards. Prepare and submit regular progress reports, site diaries, and incident reports to Head Office. Manage and enforce site HSE requirements, conduct toolbox talks, and ensure a culture of safety. Oversee commissioning and handover of completed works. Manage site documentation, including permits, quality records, and change orders. Address and resolve conflicts or disputes on site in a professional and timely manner. PERSON DESCRIPTION

Experience:

Minimum 7-10 years' experience in construction management, in a senior site-based role on large-scale solar PV or renewable energy projects. Proven track record of managing projects from site establishment to handover. Strong knowledge of construction contracts (FIDIC, NEC, or similar), quality assurance, and HSE standards. Excellent leadership, communication, and stakeholder management skills. Ability to interpret construction drawings, specifications, and schedules. Proficient in MS Office Suite, MS Project (or equivalent scheduling tools). Ability to work and live on-site in De Aar on a rotational or full-time basis. Valid driver's license and be able to relocate as required.

Specific attributes:

Sound background in the principles of engineering. In-depth understanding of construction procedures and project management principles. Familiarity with quality and health and safety standards. Familiarity with construction/ project management software. Outstanding communication and negotiation skills. Excellent organisational and time-management skills. Driven, positive, go-getter attitude. A team player with leadership abilities. Ability to work under pressure and coordinate numerous activities and groups of people who need to cooperate to achieve maximum efficiency.

Desirable attributes:

Minimum BTech qualification Ideally BSc in engineering, building science, Construction Management or relevant field Pr CM and PMP certification will be an advantage Quality Management experience is essential

What Does Success Look Like?

By 3 Months:

I will be fully integrated on site, with strong working relationships established with Sun Central, contractors, and all key stakeholders. I can demonstrate a thorough understanding of the project scope, schedules, and safety requirements. I can show effective implementation of site HSE procedures, with zero lost time injuries and a proactive safety culture established. I will have set up robust reporting, documentation, and site meeting processes to ensure clear communication and tracking.

By 6 Months:

I will be driving project progress in line with or ahead of schedule, with any potential risks or delays proactively identified and managed. I can demonstrate successful coordination of subcontractors and site resources, optimizing productivity and minimizing downtime. I can present evidence of consistently high quality of work, with minimal rework or quality incidents.

By 12 Months:

I will have delivered the project safely, on time, within budget, and to the specified quality standards. I can demonstrate full compliance with all contractual, regulatory, and environmental requirements. I can provide clear documentation, reports, and handover packs, supporting a seamless commissioning and client handover. I will have built a high-performing, motivated on-site team, contributing to Sun Central's reputation for delivery excellence in De Aar.
