Job Advert Summary

The Africa Institute of South Africa in the HSRC wishes to appoint a suitable PhD Trainee in the area of International Relations and Political Sciences. AISA leads and coordinates the HSRCxe2x80x99s research and strategic engagements in Africa in pursuit of HSRC & Department of Science and Innovation (DSI) Africa focus mandate. It, therefore, acts as a catalyst for research, capacity development and implementation support across the continent. AISA also undertakes basic, applied policy-relevant and comparative research. The Institute also seeks to build capacity and provide policy advice and implementation support to advance the HSRCxe2x80x99s own Africa Research Partnership and Collaboration Strategy as well as South Africaxe2x80x99s African Agenda, DSIxe2x80x99s Africa Strategy, SADCxe2x80x99s Regional Indicative Strategic Development Plan 2020-2030 (RISDP), the African Unionxe2x80x99s Agenda 2063, and the key frameworks of the United Nations (SDGxe2x80x99s, UNSCR 1325). It collaborates with a range of national, continental, and international governments, as well as multilateral institutions, research institutes, universities, and civil society organisations in order to achieve its objectives.
Communications and Science Journalism Specialist Ref: AISA CSJS xe2x80x93 12/2023 Pretoria Temporary Appointment (3 months)

  • Bachelorxe2x80x99s Degree in Communications of similar e.g., marketing, journalism, public relations
  • Proven experience and talent in creative communication strategies and social media (B2C PR/Comms agency, corporate communications experience preferable)
  • A sound understanding of local media, African Affairs content relevant to research and development, creator market and trends
  • Strong written and oral communication skills in English and excellent interpersonal communication skills
  • Ability to handle multiple projects and positive about working in a fast-paced environment;
  • Strong interpersonal and communications skills, and the ability to co-ordinate and capacitate staff;
  • Demonstrable proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and other accounting tools.
  • Must have intellectual and personal integrity, with a well-developed work ethic and drive, and an aptitude for innovation;
  • Should be able to work under pressure, and after hours when required to meet deadlines;
  • Must be able to work proactively and independently;


Duties and Responsibilities

The communications specialist we seek to appoint on a short term basis is a storyteller, reputation guard, credibility builder and information shaper. Among responsibilities for this role, a proven ability to easily distill and communicate complex issues on a short deadline. The ideal candidate has excellent media relations skills, the ability to analyze opportunities and risks associated with media inquiries, and the strategic judgment to respond accordingly. Ability to link research information & knowledge to policy informing platforms. Key projects will include Nation Building and Food Security in Africa, which will require adaptability and knowledge of current affairs. Responsibilities:
  • Understand the HSRCxe2x80x99s strategy, communications and engagement policies, and support regional implementation plan of 4 special projects in AISA
  • Develop the communication tools and plans for the said projects, plan for potential challenges,
  • Develop and execute communications messaging to critical government stakeholders,
  • Work with teams across the organisation including operations, researchers, partnerships, the executive responsible to provide strategic guidance and local insights
  • Support in preparation for media interviews, presentations, and other speaking engagements,
  • Plan, build and maintain relationships with media and influencers across different beats (dedicated to African Affairs) that will help us serve our mission and vision
