BRIEF DESCRIPTION:
Sustainable Finance is a powerful component of WWF South Africa's Strategy 2030. This includes ambitious targets to mobilise more than R5 Billion towards environmental impact and influence more than R50 Billion towards green (& blue) financial principles.
Broadly, WWF's work on Sustainable Finance includes two main thrusts:
Financing the Green:
This includes developing financial tools, approaches and products that increase the amount of finance that goes towards environmental and conservation efforts. This is based on the understanding that there is a significant financial gap between current finance that goes towards environmental and conservation efforts and what is needed to secure a sustainable future. New tools, approaches and products may include large landscape finance such as Project Finance for Permanence (PFP) mechanisms, blended finance and private finance vehicles for investing in Nature-based Solutions, green bonds and investment funds, etc
Greening Finance:
This includes influencing financial policy, regulation and practices by working with financial regulators (such as the South African Reserve Bank) and directly with public (e.g. Development Bank of Southern Africa) and private finance institutions (through our partnerships with Nedbank and Sanlam but also more broadly across the banking, investment and insurance sectors). Key topics include driving greater disclosure and transparency in climate and nature related investments (e.g. through initiatives such as the Task Force for Nature-related Financial Disclosures (TNFD)) as well as increased awareness of, and responsiveness to, systemic nature-related risks (such as water-risk).
