Job Description

Job Purpose
The Civil Engineer is responsible for designing, planning, and supervising the construction and maintenance of infrastructure projects (roads, bridges, dams, buildings, and industrial facilities). The role ensures structural integrity, cost-efficiency, and compliance with engineering standards and environmental regulations.Key Responsibilities
1. Design & Planning

• Develop detailed civil designs for infrastructure projects using AutoCAD Civil 3D, Revit, or Tekla.
• Conduct feasibility studies and site investigations (topographic surveys, soil tests).
• Prepare Bills of Quantities (BOQs) and cost estimates for construction projects.

2. Construction Supervision

• Oversee earthworks, drainage, and foundation construction to ensure adherence to design specifications.
• Monitor quality control of materials (concrete, steel, asphalt) through lab testing and site inspections.
• Resolve on-site technical issues (e.g., slope stability, water ingress).

3. Project Management

• Coordinate with contractors, architects, and government agencies (SANRAL, Municipalities).
• Manage project schedules, budgets, and risk assessments.
• Ensure compliance with OHS Act, Construction Regulations, and SANS 1200.

4. Infrastructure Maintenance & Rehabilitation

• Assess aging infrastructure (bridges, roads) for repair/upgrade needs.
• Design retrofitting solutions for reinforced concrete structures.
• Implement sustainable drainage systems (SuDS) for flood mitigation.

5. Regulatory & Environmental Compliance

• Obtain water use licenses (WUL) and environmental authorizations (EA).
• Ensure designs meet SANS/ISO standards and municipal bylaws.
• Conduct hydrological studies for stormwater management.

Required Qualifications

• BEng/BSc in Civil Engineering (Masterxe2x80x99s advantageous for specialized roles).
• Professional Registration:

• ECSA PrEng (mandatory for sign-off).
• SACPCMP (for construction projects).
• Certifications:

• Project Management (PMP/PRINCE2).
• Roads/Water-specific: SANRAL M5/M10, CIDB Grading.

Essential Skills & Competencies
Technical Skills

• Design Software:

• AutoCAD Civil 3D, Revit (BIM).
• Structural Analysis: Prokon, STAAD.Pro.
• Hydrology/Hydraulics: HEC-RAS, PCSWMM.
• Construction Methods:

• Road pavements (flexible/rigible).
• Reinforced concrete design (SANS 10100).
• Piling and slope stabilization.

Soft Skills

• Problem-solving for on-site challenges.
• Stakeholder management (communities, contractors).
• Report writing for tender submissions and compliance.

Experience Requirements

• 5+ years in civil engineering (construction or consulting).
• Proven Experience With:

• Roads & Highways (SANRAL projects).
• Water Infrastructure (pipelines, reservoirs).
• Mining/Energy (tailings dams, power plant civils).
• Exposure To:

• FIDIC/NEC contracts.
• GIS mapping (QGIS, ArcGIS).

Work Environment

• 60% site work (construction supervision).
• 40% office (design, client meetings).
• Remote project locations (mining/energy sectors).
