Job Description

Civil Engineer - 6 Month Contract



Job Purpose:



To provide expert civil engineering input into the feasibility study for the development of a 10,000-capacity beef cattle feedlot and high-throughput abattoir. The Civil Engineer will be responsible for assessing site conditions and designing efficient, durable, and compliant infrastructure for both feedlot and abattoir operations.

Key Responsibilities:



Conduct site assessments to evaluate

soil conditions, topography, drainage, access, and water supply infrastructure

suitability. Design civil infrastructure components including: Earthworks, roads, and access routes. Drainage and stormwater management systems. Water supply and distribution systems. Effluent and waste management systems. Structural foundations and support infrastructure. Collaborate with architects, quantity surveyors, and environmental practitioners to align designs with regulatory, environmental, and operational needs. Ensure all civil works comply with applicable building codes, SANS standards, and environmental legislation. Prepare engineering input for: Feasibility report. Feedlot and abattoir layout plans. Budget and cost estimates. Project risk assessments and mitigation strategies. Support construction phasing plans and advise on the constructability of proposed solutions. Contribute to the identification of sustainable engineering practices, including the use of local materials and environmentally friendly designs.

Minimum Qualifications and Experience:



Bachelor's Degree or higher in Civil Engineering. Minimum of

5 years' experience

in

infrastructure development for agricultural or agro-processing projects

, preferably with experience in feedlot or abattoir environments.

Professional Registration with the Engineering Council of South Africa (ECSA)

as a Pr. Eng or Pr. Tech Eng is

mandatory

. Strong working knowledge of water management, bulk infrastructure, and rural development challenges.

Key Skills and Competencies:



Proficiency in civil engineering software (Civil 3D, AutoCAD, EPANET, StormCAD, etc.). Deep understanding of site development, bulk services, and construction methodologies. Analytical and problem-solving skills in complex infrastructure contexts. Strong written and verbal communication abilities. Collaborative mindset and experience working in multi-disciplinary teams. Knowledge of health, safety, and environmental standards applicable to civil engineering works.

Working Conditions:



Based in the Eastern Cape with frequent travel to the project site in Ngqushwa. Field and office-based role requiring regular interaction with various specialists and stakeholders.
