Azure DevOps Engineer (Contract) South Africa/Hybrid
Our client requires the services of an Azure DevOps Engineer to play a critical role in designing, implementing, and maintaining automated deployment pipelines, infrastructure environments, and operational processes that support enterprise data, analytics, and application platforms. This role bridges software engineering, data engineering, and operations by enabling scalable, reliable, and repeatable deployments through DevOps and DataOps best practices.
The ideal candidate is passionate about automation, cloud-native services, CI/CD, and applying DevOps principles to data-intensive workloads.

Key Responsibilities
CI/CD Pipeline Development & Automation

• Design, build, and maintain CI/CD pipelines for data engineering, analytics, and application teams.
• Implement automated build, test, and deployment processes using tools such as Azure DevOps, GitHub Actions, GitLab CI, or Jenkins.
• Integrate pipelines with code quality checks, security scanning, and automated validation steps.

DataOps Enablement

• Automate deployment and versioning of data pipelines, ETL/ELT workflows, and machine learning models.
• Collaborate with Data Engineers and Data Scientists to ensure reliable, reproducible, and monitored data workflows.
• Manage and support orchestration platforms such as Azure Data Factory, Synapse pipelines, Airflow, dbt Cloud, Prefect, or Dagster.

Cloud Infrastructure & Platform Engineering

• Build and manage Infrastructure-as-Code using Terraform, Azure ARM/Bicep, AWS CloudFormation, or equivalent tools.
• Manage cloud environments (Azure, AWS, or GCP) to ensure secure, scalable, and cost-effective operations.
• Support containerised environments using Docker and Kubernetes.

Monitoring, Observability & Reliability

• Implement monitoring, logging, and alerting for pipelines and platform services.
• Apply SRE and DevOps practices to improve platform reliability, resilience, and incident response.
• Create runbooks and automate routine operational and maintenance tasks.

Collaboration, Governance & Best Practices

• Enforce source control, branching strategies, and deployment standards.
• Work closely with Data Engineering, Software Engineering, Security, and Architecture teams.
• Promote DevOps and DataOps culture, automation-first principles, and continuous improvement.

Qualifications & Experience
Education:

• Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Data Analytics, or a related field.

Experience:

• 3-7+ years' experience in DevOps, DataOps, Site Reliability Engineering (SRE), or data engineering environments.
• Hands-on experience supporting large-scale, cloud-based platforms.

Certifications (Advantageous):

• Azure, AWS, or GCP cloud certifications
• Terraform or Infrastructure-as-Code certifications
• Kubernetes or container platform certifications

Knowledge & Skills
Technical Skills:

• Strong experience with CI/CD tools such as Azure DevOps, GitHub Actions, GitLab CI, or Jenkins.
• Proficiency in Infrastructure-as-Code practices and tooling.
• Hands-on experience with cloud platforms including Azure, AWS, or GCP.
• Strong scripting skills using Python, Bash, PowerShell, or similar languages.
• Solid understanding of containerisation (Docker) and container orchestration (Kubernetes).
• Working knowledge of data engineering and analytics platforms such as Spark, Databricks, dbt, Airflow, Synapse, Snowflake, or BigQuery.
• Strong understanding of Git-based source control and branching strategies (GitFlow, trunk-based development).
