CORE PURPOSE OF JOB

The core purpose of this job in the Department of Philosophy, Faculty of Humanities, at Nelson Mandela University, is to contribute to both undergraduate and postgraduate teaching, as well as to pursue impactful research. The Department aims to strengthen the discipline from a teaching and learning perspective, given the Departments role in supporting multiple disciplines and Departments within the University. The successful candidate must thus demonstrate the potential to be a committed and adaptable teacher of Philosophy, both as a core subject and as a support subject. They must be able to manage the demands of a comprehensive university in a fast-changing higher education environment, which includes increasingly large classes and both in person and hybrid teaching. In line with the revitalization strategy adopted by the Faculty of Humanities, the Department also seeks a candidate who can orientate their philosophical approach(es) to research and engagement toward contemporary issues in an Africa-purposed manner; such issues include ethics, politics, global subcultures within the growing realities of digitization, and new technological developments. The department is actively expanding beyond conventional theoretical frameworks and welcomes innovative, forward-thinking approaches. we are looking for a candidate who demonstrates the potential for exploring new scholarly frontiers that and contribute to our growing strategic interests as a department. The successful candidate must demonstrate the research and scholarly capacity to critique across a wide spectrum of views and perspectives, thereby enabling new paths of thought.

To facilitate teaching and learning through a humanizing pedagogy framework To teach large undergraduate classes face-to-face and to also use online learning platforms To participate in engagement within the University and wider community To supervise postgraduate students To develop relevant module content in collaboration with other staff in the discipline of Philosophy To contribute to the creation of knowledge through pursuit of further higher degrees (if applicable) and through research and publication in accredited academic journals To perform administrative duties relevant to the portfolio

REQUIREMENTS

In order to be considered for appointment as an Associate Lecturer to this post, candidates must have:

An Honours degree in Philosophy Knowledge of diverse philosophical theories and their application, preferably moral and political philosophy Experience in facilitating learning of a high quality at university level Evidence of research output, such as published articles in accredited journals
