Health-e News, South Africa's award-winning health journalism outlet, is recruiting an
Associate Editor and Partnerships Officer to strengthen our editorial programmes and support
the organisation's growth.
This hybrid role spans editorial coordination, donor relations, event support, and partnership
development -ideal for an innovative, values driven editor who is also eager to help build a
sustainable, high-impact newsroom.
The successful candidate will work closely with the Managing Editor and News Editor and
play a key role in shaping Health-e's storytelling, partnerships, and visibility.
Key responsibilities
Editorial (approx. 60%)
Support editorial planning with the managing editor and news editor
Commission, develop, and edit stories from Health-e's network of freelancers and community journalists (CJs)
Support the recruiting and onboarding of community journalists
Mentor CJs to strengthen reporting, structure, and clarity
Edit vernacular-language content
Contribute to publication scheduling and quality control
Align editorial output with audience engagement goals
Write features, explanatory pieces or news stories when required
Partnerships and fundraising (approx. 40%)
Assist the managing editor with fundraising research, donor liaison, and proposal development
Help coordinate partner-driven editorial projects and campaigns
Support planning and execution of events, workshops, and public dialogues
Track deliverables for grant-funded projects and assist with reporting
Identify opportunities for collaboration, revenue diversification, and audience/community growth

REQUIREMENTS
Required skills and experience
Minimum 5-7 years of newsroom experience (reporting and/or editing)
Demonstrated editing experience with strong command of structure, clarity, and accuracy
Experience in partnerships, donor relations, fundraising OR a clear aptitude and willingness to learn
Strong understanding of South African civil society, health advocacy, or development sector
Fluent in English and at least one South African language
Ability to manage multiple projects, deadlines, and contributors
Familiarity with digital publishing, social media dynamics, and audience development
Excellent communication and relationship-building skills
