is seeking a dedicated and skilled Assistant to the Deputy Director of Utility Partnerships to support the leadership and coordination of our Utility Partnerships Division. This is a volunteer role ideal for a technically strong professional who is eager to make a measurable impact in the urban WASH sector. The Assistant will work directly under the Deputy Director, providing technical and operational support to improve the performance of our Utility Specialists (USs) and ensure the success of our utility engagements across Africa.

Responsibilities

Support to the Deputy Director (Operations)

Assists the Deputy Director (Conrad) in managing and coordinating the UPD team Participates in weekly UPD meetings and contributes technical input for planning and problem-solving
Technical Oversight and Mentorship

Acts as a "Lead Utility Specialist" providing high-level technical oversight and mentorship to all Utility Specialists Supports quality assurance of the Utility Specialist role across all utility partnerships Ensures that technical guidance to Utility Specialists is consistent with UPD's objectives and best practices
Liaison Role with Focus Leads

Serves as the primary technical contact for UPD Focus Leads Ensures strong communication and integration between technical workstreams and overall UPD strategy
Operational & Technical Gap Filling

Provides operational or technical support to utilities where US availability is limited or inconsistent Offers targeted support in key areas such as: Utility operations and management Water loss management Customer service improvement Policy reform and institutional strengthening Strategic partnerships and stakeholder engagement
Monitoring and Reporting

Assists in ensuring timely and accurate reporting from Utility Specialists and UPD workstreams Supports the Deputy in monitoring progress against the UPD's OGSMs (Objectives, Goals, Strategies, and Measures)

Requirements and Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in Engineering or related technical field (Master's preferred) Strong technical experience in urban WASH and utility operations in the developing world Demonstrated experience in mentoring or leading technical teams Excellent written and verbal communication skills (English) Ability to work effectively in multicultural environments and across time zones Software skills with a preference for MS Suite, Trello, Slack, Salesforce, and Google Drive Proven ability to work independently and meet deadlines Strong organizational, analytical, and coordination skills Passion for capacity building and improving utility performance
