Role Clarification & Key Performance Areas
At the University of the Western Cape (UWC), the Centre for Innovative Education & Communication Technologies (CIECT) is responsible for driving emergent technologies and innovative collaborative projects, to support teaching and learning aligned to the broader digital transformation agenda; and the Institutional Operating Plan (IOP). The university has continued to see significant strides in relation to the improvement of teaching practices, and especially online teaching, learning and assessment practices (blended and fully-online), for student access and success.
CIECT has identified a growth area within the design of interactive online learning space for learning and teaching. In order to deliver the Centre's strategic initiatives, an opportunity exists for a suitably qualified and experienced candidate, Assistant Instructional Designer.
The Key Responsibilities of the incumbent include but are not limited to:
? Assist with the duties of design and daily operations support of interactive online environments and effective usage of eTools within the institutional learning management system (LMS) and other integrated learning platforms.
? Meet established deadlines and communicate effectively with stakeholders (lecturers, GLAs, professional support), in collaboration with the main Instructional Designer.
? Assist with the design and development of instructional design workshops in relation to the selection of eTools, preparing the facilitator's toolkit, and creating the training content.
? Co-facilitate within various instructional design workshop.
? Assist the main Instructional Designer with the creation of interactive online within the institutional LMS, in collaboration with the Instructional Designer.
? Assist with the design and development of CIECT's and departmental short courses hosted on the Pillar7 platform.
? Assist with the hosting of eLearning colloquia and seminars/webinars.
? Assist the main Instructional Designer with continuous quality reviews and recommendations related to a blended learning design.
? Keep abreast of emerging technologies and global trends, determining impact upon the design of interactive learning environments.
? Assist the Manager with the awareness around the security and POPIA landscape, especially in relation to the design of online learning and teaching environments, assessment processes within the LMS, access, sharing and storage of learning content to mitigate risks; and recommend solutions.
? Work closely with the Instructional Designers and CIECT developers to respond to lecturer and student queries in relation to LMS access, usage, and assessment activity.
Minimum Requirements
Minimum education and experience required:
? National Diploma or Advanced Certificate (NQF 6) OR National Certificate or Higher Certificate at (NQF 5), with four (4) years relevant experience within a Learning Management System environment, and specifically in relation to administration and design within in a higher education setting.
Skills and Experience
Strong knowledge or understanding in these key areas would be advantageous:
? Instructional Design Frameworks & Technologies: blended learning models, flipped classroom approaches, video software, concept mapping software, eTools (lessons, rubrics, course resources, statistics, calendar, announcements), Google Applications, and video-conferencing tools
? Learning Management System: Design and development of online environments integrating various eTools (content creation, assessment and communication)
? Communication and Reporting: Oral and written communication skills
? Support, Facilitation and Presentation:
o Support stakeholders within an extensive support structure, including email, walk-in, telephone and online
o Design and develop instructional design training programmes and content
o Attention to detail and the ability to work within a timeline for design and development phases
o Ability to work independently as well as in a team
o Ability to explain technical terms in non-technical manner
o Ability to explore emerging technologies and share within team capacity building sessions
o Facilitation and presentation skills
o People and interpersonal skills
Minimum competencies required:
? Critical thinking and problem-solving skills
? Ability to work across interdisciplinary teams
? Ability to identify problems within the LMS (iKamva) swiftly using a range of eTools and techniques
? Ability to explore and adapt to new technologies, best practice frameworks in the eLearning environment
? Understanding of the security and POPIA landscape, especially in relation to roles and permissions within the LMS, sharing information (including student grades), and storage of content/material
? Embracing ethical usage and considerations of the design of content and assessments
? Keep abreast of emerging technologies, and third-party tools integrated within the LMS
