Job Description

A well-known hotel and golf course in Phalaborwa is seeking the services of an Assistant Greenkeeper. The 18-hole Bob Grimsdell designed Par 72 Championship course was previously one of South Africa's most prestigious courses and a major attraction due to its location adjacent to the Kruger National Park.

PURPOSE:

The Assistant Greenkeeper plays a crucial role in maintaining and improving the golf course to ensure it is presented to the highest standards for members and visitors. You support the maintenance and repair of all golf course equipment and golf carts. Your role is essential in ensuring that machinery is in excellent working condition, maintaining a clean and organized workshop, and ensuring that all equipment is ready for daily use.

DUTIES

Golf Course Maintenance

Assist in the preparation and upkeep of greens, tees, fairways, bunkers, and roughs. Carry out mowing, aeration, rolling, and other turf maintenance tasks as directed. Apply topdressing, fertilizers, and other chemical spray treatments under supervision. Maintain and rake bunkers, ensuring consistent playability. Train staff on the safe operation of machinery when required.

Machinery Operation & Maintenance

a) Equipment Maintenance & Repair

Perform routine servicing, preventative maintenance, and repairs on all golf course machinery, including greens mowers, fairway mowers, rough mowers,

tractors, aerators, and utility vehicles. Diagnose mechanical issues and carry out necessary repairs efficiently to minimize equipment downtime. Maintain accurate service and repair records for all equipment.

b) Blade & Cutting Unit Maintenance

Sharpen, grind, and adjust reel and rotary mower blades to ensure a high-quality cut on turf surfaces. Set up cutting units to precise specifications to maintain optimal course conditions.

c) Workshop & Inventory Management

Maintain a clean, organized, and safe workshop environment. Monitor and manage parts inventory, ordering replacements as needed. Ensure all tools and equipment are properly maintained and stored.

Irrigation & Drainage Management

Assist with the operation and maintenance of irrigation systems to ensure optimal turf hydration. Help identify and address drainage issues on the course.

Course Presentation & Environmental Care

Ensure the golf course is consistently well-presented and aesthetically maintained. Assist in implementing environmentally sustainable maintenance practices. Follow best practices for waste management and chemical application.

Health & Safety Compliance

Adhere to all health and safety regulations regarding equipment, chemical handling, and working practices. Wear appropriate PPE and ensure all tasks are carried out safely. Report any hazards or safety concerns to the Head Greenkeeper.

Qualifications:

A relevant qualification in turf management, horticulture, or a related is an advantage. Certification or vocational training in mechanics, engineering, or a related field (preferred). Valid Drivers License.

Experience

Previous experience in golf course maintenance or groundskeeping essential. Basic understanding of turf care, irrigation, and machinery operation. Proven experience as a mechanic, preferably within the golf, turf, or agricultural industry.
