Role Clarification & Key Performance Areas
At the University of the Western Cape (UWC), the Centre for Innovative Education & Communication Technologies (CIECT) is responsible for driving emergent technologies and innovative collaborative projects, to support teaching and learning aligned the broader digital transformation agenda; and the Institutional Operating Plan (IOP).
The university continues to see the increasing demand for basic digital literacy skills across disciplines, for first year and senior students. The students may be tech-savvy and know their way around social media platforms. However, many lack the knowledge of how to apply basic computer skills for their academic journey. CIECT has identified a growth area within the demand for Digital Academic Literacy training across the seven faculties. In order to deliver the Centre's strategic initiatives, an opportunity exists for a suitably qualified and experienced candidate, Assistant DAL Facilitator.
The Key Responsibilities of the incumbent include but are not limited to:
? Assist with the daily operations of the Digital Academic Literacy (DAL) team to prepare and deliver a large-scale, first year student development programme.
? Co-facilitate face-to-face training workshops and assist with support of students on various MS packages (Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Computer basics).
? Assist with the internal DAL Helpdesk, including student consultations (after training), mailbox, online/iKamva discussion forum and chatbox.
? Assist with administrative duties in relation to the collation of multiple class schedules, large-scale student sign-up, publication of announcements in learning platforms, and the booking of teaching venues.
? Assist the main facilitator with Tutor recruitment processes.
? Assist with Tutor mentoring training sessions, and the creation of self-directed learning material for the navigation and use of the online platforms (iKamva and MindTap/simulations).
? Assist with the creation of DAL online modules within the iKamva platform for student support.
? Assist with the creation of DAL formative assessments within the Mindtap platform.
? Assist the main facilitator and Manager with the review of assessments aligned to the programme outline.
? Assist with the facilitation of CIECT short-courses, in collaboration with the broader team.
? Assist the main facilitator with requests to support differently-abled students in collaboration with the Centre for Student Support Services (CSSS).
Minimum Requirements
Minimum education and experience required:
? National Diploma or Advanced Certificate (NQF 6) OR National Certificate or Higher Certificate at (NQF 5) , with four (4) years relevant experience within a large-scale digital literacy student programme, within a Higher Education Setting.
Skills and Experience
Strong knowledge or understanding in these key areas would be advantageous.
? Use of Microsoft Office packages: Word, Excel PowerPoint and computer basics.
? Use of Mindtap Platform: Design and development of assessment tasks; and use of training simulations.
? Use of Google G-Suite: Gmail, Google meets, forms, Google drive etc.
? Use of Marks Administration System (MAS): Capturing and processing DAL Programme Grades for department/s (credits aligned to broader modules).
? Use of Learning Management System: Engage in iKamva to create online environment for DAL Programme.
? Facilitation and Presentation:
o Attention to detail and the ability to work within a timeline for production processes
o Ability to work independently as well as in a team
o Ability to explain technical terms in non-technical manner
o Ability to explore emerging technologies and share within team capacity building sessions
o Facilitation and presentation skills
o Written and oral communication skills.
o People/interpersonal skills
? Stress Management:
o High tolerance for the delivery of multiple face-to-face classes per week.
Minimum competencies required:
? Critical thinking and problem-solving skills
? Ability to adapt teaching methods to suit different learning styles
? Effective planning of lessons and activities
? Ability to work across interdisciplinary teams
? Ability to identify challenges within large classes (face-to-face and online)
? Ability to explore and adapt to new technologies, best practice frameworks in relation to academic literacies
? Understanding of the security and POPIA landscape, especially in relation to roles and permissions within SASI, MAS, iKamva and Mindtap platform the LMS
? Ability to embrace ethical usage and considerations of content creation, emerging technologies, and disruptive technologies (including AI)
